FIFTEEN

“Lieutenant McCarney, sir?”

Lieutenant McCarney glared at the soldier standing next to him like he was ready to squeeze the life out of him. Luckily for the soldier, Lieutenant McCarney must have noticed he was a messenger and not another distraction, because his expression softened, and he followed the messenger, walking away from the table.

“Change of plans,” Lieutenant McCarney announced as soon as the messenger left, returning to the table. “Reed, you’re no longer taking your squad to Point B. It has been compromised. You’ll deploy to Point A with Price, clear?” He pointed at the beaten-up map.

“Yes, sir.”

Lieutenant McCarney folded back the map. “We’re leaving at ten hundred hours, get ready,” he informed them as he put away the map and grabbed his carbine.

“Yes, sir,” Frank and Reed both said and left.

“God, I hate it when they change plans last minute,” Frank complained.

Reed put his helmet on. “I didn’t think it made much sense.”

“Well, McCarney clearly got some intel on it.”

“Or maybe he’s just losing it. He always has to complicate everything.”

“What? Don’t be stupid, Reed,” Frank said, shaking his head. “He knows what he’s doing. Why do you always have to question all the orders we get?”

“And why do you always follow orders so blindly, Price? That’s going to cost your life someday, let me tell you,” Reed said, stopping next to his squad. “C’mon, let’s go.”

Frank sighed and kept walking towards Daniel and Oliver. He had better things to do than listen to Reed’s nonsense. “Look alive, boys,” he said, grabbing his bag, which was next to Daniel. “We’re moving.”

“Finally, it took you long enough,” Oliver complained in a hushed tone.

Daniel stood up and held out his hand to Oliver. “C’mon, Ollie, enough with the complaining,” he said, helping Oliver up.

“Where’s Eddie?” Frank asked.

“No idea. Probably sulking somewhere outside,” Oliver said gruffly.

“Why? What did you do?”

“I think he’s crossed with us. No idea why.”

“Wait,” said Frank, furrowing his brow. “Goddammit, Limey! Did you tell him to go speak with Lieutenant McCarney?” Frank didn’t wait for an answer. “Let’s go, Moretti,” he told Eddie as they stepped outside.

“It’s your turn,” Oliver told Eddie, pointing at the machine gun on the ground next to Eddie.

Frank picked up the machine gun and shoved it against Oliver’s chest, causing him to lose balance for a moment. “No, Chapman, it’s yours.”

“Are you serious?” Oliver grabbed the gun reluctantly.

Frank sneered. “Dead serious, smartass.”

Eddie butted out his cigarette on the barn wall and threw it on the ground. “Where are we going, Sarge?”

“Help out a couple of platoons from another company that has been struggling since yesterday. We’re deploying with the Second Squad.”

“When I thought this couldn’t possibly get any worse…” Oliver said, walking behind them next to Daniel.

“Yeah, tough luck, Limey,” said Frank, looking back at him.

The idea of fighting beside Reed didn’t seem to please Frank any more than it pleased Oliver. But those were Lieutenant McCarney’s orders, and there was nothing he could do about it. Even if Reed was right, Frank was still going to follow them.
